adults · Master’s student, University of Latvia

You leave a lesson feeling good. You know the new phrases. You even think, “I’ll practise tomorrow.”

Then tomorrow comes, and so does everything else.

I teach English to adults, and I see this all the time. Work runs late. A child gets ill. A week passes, then another. The next lesson starts, and half of the last one has slipped away.

This is not laziness. It is not a lack of motivation either. It is a gap between lessons, and a gap can be designed around.

Why it happens

Nobody is waiting for you. In class, a teacher, a group and a time slot hold you in place. At home, you have to hold yourself.

Everything is scattered. For a long time I sent my learners worksheets by email, links through Google Classroom, Padlet and Wakelet, and tests through Google Forms. Each tool was fine. Together, they were a mess. Learners did not know where to start, and I could not see what they had done.

The task feels too big. “Study English” is not a task. It is a mountain.

A little theory, kept short

The researcher Barry Zimmerman describes self-regulated learning as a cycle: you plan, you act and watch yourself, then you look back and adjust. The good news is that this is a skill, not a fixed personality trait. You can practise it.

A second idea helps too: microlearning. Learn in small units, each with one clear goal. For busy adults, small and regular usually beats big and rare.

The 10-minute routine

Four steps, and their first letters spell STEP: Set, Try, Evaluate, Plan.

S

Set1 minute

Choose one tiny goal. Not “improve my speaking”, but “say three sentences about my job”.

T

Try6 minutes

Do one short task. Read, listen or type. Then say your sentences out loud. Speaking to an empty room still counts.

E

Evaluate2 minutes

Write one line: “What was easy? What was hard?”

P

Plan1 minute

Decide tomorrow’s tiny goal and the time. Link it to something you already do, like your first coffee.

That is the whole routine. It is small on purpose.

Want examples? See STEP for A2, B1 and B2, and a prompt to try it with a free AI chat. Open the examples →

An example for work English

Monday Introduce yourself in a meeting. I’m responsible for …

Tuesday Ask someone to repeat. Could you repeat that, please?

Wednesday Disagree politely. I see your point, but …

Three days, thirty minutes, and you have three phrases you can really use.

When you miss a week

You will miss days. Everyone does. Do not try to catch up on everything.

Go back to the last thing you knew well and spend ten minutes on it. Then move forward. A short return is better than a long feeling of guilt.

What to look for in any course

Whatever you choose, check four things:

Tasks are short.

You can see your progress.

Everything is in one place.

Someone answers your questions.

Why I care about this

I built my own learning platform because of this problem. It is part of my Master’s research at the University of Latvia, and it is still being developed and tested. It has short activities, a button that takes you to the next step, and a page that shows your study time and active days. During the pilot, joining is free.

Start small. Ten minutes is enough to begin.

Practise with me

Book a free 15-minute online chat with me.
